Digital Infrastructure and Labor Productivity

The digital technology transforms the way how firms produce and labors work. Doesinvestment in digital infrastructure enhance labor productivity and increase wage? If so. bhow much and is it cost effective? And is the productivity effect of digital infrastructureskill and gender neutral or biased? We use several sets of data from China to answer thesequestions. First, we match the full-economy industry-level wage data with province-levelinfrastructure investment data during 2003 to 2019. By addressing the potential endogeneitof infrastructure investment and technology adoption, we find those industries that relymore on digital infrastructure in production have experienced a higher increase in laborproductivity. Second on average, a 10 percent increase in digital infrastructure investmentenhances labor productivity by more than 1 percent. This productivity effect is highercompared with investment in traditional infrastructure, such as electricity andtransportation Finally, combined with the 2010 census data, we find suggestive evidencethat digital infrastructure tends to complement skilled and female labor.
